IMPULS+ Project

Personalized implants for the surgery of tomorrow

CERHUM is participating in the collaborative IMPULS+ project (Personalized Maxillofacial Implants Using Artificial Intelligence), carried out in partnership with 3D-Side. The project is co-funded by the European Union (ERDF) and the Walloon Region under the ERDF/JTF Wallonia 2021–2027 Programme – COOTECH measure.

Project objective

The aim of IMPULS+ is to develop a comprehensive solution for personalized maxillofacial surgery by combining intelligent surgical planning software with a new generation of bioresorbable implants manufactured using 3D printing. The project brings together artificial intelligence, medical image processing, digital surgical planning, automated design of patient-specific implants, and the development of innovative biomaterials. Its ambition is to simplify and accelerate surgical preparation while providing bioresorbable implants tailored to the specific needs of each patient.

Expected outcomes

Ultimately, IMPULS+ aims to deliver a fully integrated solution combining intelligent surgical planning software with personalized bioresorbable implants. The project is expected to reduce implant design and manufacturing lead times, streamline surgical planning, and strengthen Wallonia's position as an innovation hub in biomaterials, medical 3D printing, and artificial intelligence applied to healthcare.

Contributions

As part of the project, Cerhum is developing a new generation of bioresorbable implants for maxillofacial surgery, together with the associated additive manufacturing processes. The company is designing an innovative biomaterial that supports bone regeneration before gradually resorbing, while meeting the clinical and regulatory requirements of both the European and U.S. markets. Cerhum also contributes to the development of the design rules that will enable the automated generation of patient-specific implants, ensuring that the resulting designs remain clinically relevant while allowing surgeons to make case-specific adjustments when needed.

3D-Side is developing the intelligent surgical planning software by automating medical image processing, 3D anatomical reconstruction, and computer-assisted design of patient-specific implants. The company is also integrating the design rules developed within the project into a secure and intuitive digital workflow, enabling faster generation of personalized implant designs while preserving the flexibility for surgeons to review and refine each implant according to the specific clinical situation.
